When it comes to nutrition, ultimately you control what you’re buying from the store and setting out on the dinner table. We’re putting a spotlight on added sugar in our diets and why it’s harmful for our health. Sugar is something we can’t really cut out of our diets altogether, but we can substitute it with healthier alternatives. Our sweet tooth can actually be more harmful to our bodies and overall health than we think.
Added sugar, found in certain products we might even think are “healthy”, are leading causes to low energy levels, weight fluctuation, skin breakouts, have no nutritional value & leads to higher health risks. Food companies add all this extra sugar to make sure their product can sit on shelves longer, taste “better”, and get you hooked into buying it again. Neurons fire off in your brain when you have sugar and releases dopamine, similar to a brain of person taking drugs (pretty crazy)!! Added sugar can be found in almost every recipe, even if it’s a savory one and easier than you think to swap out with natural replacements.
Try substituting sugar with applesauce, mashed bananas, raw unfiltered honey, agave nectar, stevia (a natural plant-based sweetener), or maple syrup instead. In moderation, these replacements are easier on your digestive system and will slowly release sugar gradually instead of having a quick spike in your insulin levels. That means, no sugar crashing right after your meal or snack! A study published in 2014 in JAMA Internal Medicine, found an association between a high-sugar diet and a greater risk of dying from heart disease. Over the course of the 15-year study, people who got 17% to 21% of their calories from added sugar had a 38% higher risk of dying from cardiovascular disease compared with those who consumed 8% of their calories as added sugar.
Sugar is also linked to inflammation in your body, high blood pressure, diabetes, increased risk of stroke, heart attack, etc. Your liver also takes a beating with too much sugar because it’s the main organ in your body that processes and digests what you intake daily and detoxifies your body. Although, keep in mind that natural sugars found in fruit, veggies, dairy products, and whole grains do benefit your body’s overall health and can help lower your risk of chronic diseases. Your skin will also glow and look clearer if you eat a proper, balanced diet and lower your sugar intake. Natural sugar also allows you to get the vitamins and nutrients your body vitally needs to maintain your health.
All aspects of life are about balance. We know it’s hard to cut out sugar from everything, but start small to change your life. You will start to look and feel your best!
